Sweet Pea High Scent
Lathyrus odoratus
Ruffley ivory white flowers tinged with lavender on the edges bloom in cooler temperatures and tolerate light frosts. Flowers are produced on tall, fast growing vines adding early-season color to fences and trellises. Flowers attract a range of pollinators and are deer resistant. ‘High Scent’ is especially known for its sweet fragrance in the garden and floral arrangements.

Early-Season Seeding: Start seed indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date. Can be transplanted before your last frost date if hardened off or transplant after the danger of frost has passed. Direct seed outdoors 3-4 weeks before the last frost date or when soil temperature is above 55F.
Late-Season Seeding: Can also be direct seeded or transplanted in zone 8 and above in late-fall to bloom in late-winter or early-spring.
Growing Tips: Seed in containers 3-4” deep to accommodate deep roots. Plants are heavy feeders and require organic matter incorporated into the soil and fertilization every 1-2 weeks once established. Vines require at least a 6’ trellis to climb and string or hand weaving may be needed to encourage stems up the trellis. Each flower will turn into a seed pod which upon drying, can be harvested and saved to sow later. Keep the roots shaded and cool to encourage a longer blooming period.
Cut Flower: Pinch vine to 3-5 nodes when the plant is 8” tall to promote multiple vines. Harvest flowers when the bottom 2-3 blooms are open. Can be harvested as single stems with 3-5 florets or as a vine with leaves, and 2-3 stems. Cut flowers before they go to seed to promote flower production. Vase life up to 6-7 days with flower food.
