Dahlia Seed 'Dwarf Mix
Dahlia variabilis
This is a mix for landscape. Each dahlia will be a new varietal that is not true to the parent. This mix includes bedding dahlias of various heights.
Dahlias are a gorgeous addition to the garden and this seed mix is an easy option compared to planting dahlia tubers. This mix includes a range of colors with single and double blooms that add cheer to your garden and floral arrangements. Dahlia petals are also edible and can be used to add color to drinks and desserts.
Seed Count: approximately 25-50 seeds
Plant Height: 10-16”
Light Requirements: full sun
Soil Preference: rich, well draining soil
USDA Zones: 4-10 (annual or tender perennial in warm zones)
How to Grow
Germination: 3-5 days at 65-70F
Seeding Depth: 1/4”
Plant Spacing: 9-12”
Days to Maturity: 70-90 days
Early-Season Seeding: Start seed indoors 4-5 weeks before the last frost date, transplant after the danger of frost has passed. Direct seed outdoors after the last frost date or when soil temperature is above 60F.
Late-Season Seeding: Start seed indoors or direct seed outdoors at least 12 weeks before the first frost date.
Growing Tips: Plants do not tolerate being root bound and it is important to transplant before the roots grow too large. Plants may require staking to prevent stems from breaking over in the wind or being weighed down by the blossoms. After the plant has died back in the fall, tubers can be dug up and saved to plant again next year. Cut plants back 2-4” above the soil and dig up tubers. Allow them to sit for a few days before packing them in peat, sand, or vermiculite in a container that allows air flow.
Cut Flower: Harvest when blooms are almost completely open but before the back petals have begun to wilt. Flower food will result in a vase-life of 5-7 days.
