$1.00

Centaurea cyanus

These striking deep maroon 1-2” diameter flowers bloom summer through fall attracting pollinators, beneficial insects and repelling deer. Textural flowers add interest to gardens, and fresh or dried floral arrangements. Flowers are als edible with a very mild floral flavor making them a perfect addition to decorating salads or desserts. If flowers are left to produce seed they will freely self-sow.

Seed Count: approximately 50 seeds

Plant Height: 20-40”

Light Requirements: full sun

Soil Preference: moderate fertility and moisture, pH 6.5-7.5

USDA Zones: 2-11 (annual)

How to Grow

Germination: 10-14 days at 60-65F, light required

Seeding Depth: 1/4” depth

Plant Spacing: 8-12”

Days to Maturity: 65-75 days

Early-Season Seeding: Starting seed indoors is not recommended since plants don’t like to be transplanted. Direct seed outdoors after the last frost date.

Late-Season Seeding: Direct seed outdoors at least 10 weeks before the first frost date.

Growing Tips: Removing spent flowers will result in more blooms. Plants are an annual but freely self sow and will return each year. Remove flowers before they produce seed if you don’t want plants to spread. Succession plantings every 3 weeks will ensure a consistent bloom time and flower harvest.

Cut Flower: Harvest when flowers are half way open or harvest the stem when most of the buds are showing color for a vase-life of 5-7 days. For dried flowers, harvest when flowers are fully open and hang upside down in a cool, dry area for a few weeks.
