Tagetes erecta

These giant blooms draw the eye with their fiery hue. Their petals have serrated edges and pull upwards into a puff-like shape. Marigold’s in shades of yellow and orange add color to garden’s, containers and floral arrangements. Flowers attract a variety of pollinators and are edible with a spicy citrus flavor. Marigold’s are bright additions to floral arrangements and strung garlands.

Plant Height: 24-30”

Light Requirements: full sun

Soil Preference: rich, moist, well-draining soil, pH 6-7.5

USDA Zones: 3-9 (annual)

How to Grow

Germination: 4-7 days at 75-80F

Seeding Depth: 1/4” depth, darkness aids germination, scarify and soak seeds

Plant Spacing: 8-12”

Days to Maturity: 70-90 days

Early-Season Seeding: Start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost date and transplant after the danger of frost has passed. Direct seed in early-spring as soon as soil can be worked.

Late-Season Seeding: Start seeds indoors or direct seed at least 8 weeks before the first frost.

Growing Tips: Plants prefer consistent moisture. Deadheading flowers after they bloom will encourage more blooms.

Cut Flower: Harvest when flower center is still tight and left unfurled.
