Aster 'China Powder Puff Mix'

$1.00

Callistephus chinensis

A mix of all colors of our powder puff aster varieties. Asters are wonderful because they bloom in late summer at a time when there’s a bit of lull in the garden. Tall stems work well as an accent cut flower in arrangements and are a beautiful addition to the garden. Contrasting mix of bright colors is eye-catching and attracts pollinators.

Seed Count: 100 seeds

Plant Type: Annual

USDA Zones: 4-8

Light Requirements: full sun

Soil Preference: well draining soil with organic matter 5.5-7.5

Bloom: mix of white, pink, rose, peach, crimson red, skyblue, and medium blue, 2-3” diameter, blooms early-summer to fall

Plant Height: 20-36”

How to Grow

Germination: 7-10 days at 65-70F

Seeding Depth: 1/8” depth, lightly cover seed with soil, light required for germination

Plant Spacing: 6-12”

Days to Maturity: 60-90 days

Early-Season Seeding: Start seed indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date, transplant when danger of frost has passed. Direct seed outdoors after last frost date when soil temperature is above 65F. Can self sow.

Late-Season Seeding: Start seed indoors or direct seed outdoors 13 weeks before the last frost date.

Growing Tips: Avoid using fertilizer that is extremely high in nitrogen. It will cause plants to become tall and leggy and produce fewer blooms. Grow in a different location each year to avoid wilt disease issues. Deadhead flowers for a second round of blooms.

Cut Flower: Harvest when the outer flower petals begin to open. Exceptionally long vase life up to 14 days with flower food. If drying flowers, wait to harvest until petals are completely open.
